Seasons under the Sun

As long as the sun is shining, seasons come and go. And, as long as the sun rises, I’m inching closer to my destination.

According to our taste and emotional cycle, we tend to have attachments or favorites as the season changes. The memories of some season, whether good or bad, linger in our hearts.

Some seasons were dry and difficult to get, especially if there was a scarcity of water supply in remote areas. However, those were good times for the industrious to arrange a good source of water year-round.

On the contrary, some seasons were full of life, happening, and everyone’s at peace.

Here I would like to focus more of the dry season, which shaped our living to developed a desire for the living water. Some actually did become the source of water in the abiding grace of God.

Autumn Season:

Autumn season, as long as I can recall, is one of my favorite times of the year. In the region of the world where I grew up temperature was just fine, with clear skies, and a moonlit night where the Milky Way was a sight to cherish.

The period adjoining late Spring and early Summer was dry, although some blossoming flowers were a delight. Other than that, water was scarce as the water level dipped and the streams dried up.

Early rain is a delight in this period. In ancient Israel early rain was a source of hope ending the dry season. Either way, Autumn plays an important role in life cycle of people in different region.

Autumn Rain:

In Psalms 84, the soul of the Psalmist deeply yearns for the courts of the Lord. I’m astonished by the desire expressed in the passage, who were even envious of the smallest of birds – the sparrow that built their nest in the house of God.

The pilgrimage of the sojourner towards Zion through the Valley of Baka – the Valley of Weeping or Tears becomes a place of transformation, as it is written:

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. v.6

Seasons of life:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 provides a poetic and philosophical reflection on the passage of time and the different seasons of life.

It highlights that both joy and sorrow, growth and decay, are part of the human experience and are divinely ordained.

The verse, together with Psalms 84, reminds believers to find meaning and purpose in each season, recognizing that they are all part of God’s plan.

Life is no exception from difficulties. No one can escape the divine providence, but learned from any of the dry seasons, which may transform us through the spirit of God to become a spring of water covering the pools of people around us.

Adapting to seasons:

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

This verse discusses how time and chance affect outcomes, suggesting that wisdom involves understanding and adapting to the various seasons of life.

In reality, the seasons of life were like a rollercoaster ride, much more than the seasons under the sun. For summer, we can somehow prepare our clothes and food intake to boost our immune system as it was in the winter.

However, in the seasons of life, adapting to illness, sickness seems impossible, just the moments of happiness that are fleeting.

God appointed seasons:

The seasons of life keeps on changing, there is a time for everything. The hard times makes us strong in the spirit if the Lord is our go to refuge rather earthly promises.

It might be hard to admit, but certain seasons of life are appointed for a reason. Everything has its beginning and end, except for the creator. Thus, it is safe to trust in the Creator.

‘He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. The sun rises, and they steal away; they return and lie down in their dens. Psalms 104:19-22

God’s designed seasons:

People go out to their work, to their labor until evening. All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time.

When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. Psalms 104: 19-28

It is always safer to be in the hands of the Lord God than to trust in our knowledge and little experience to thrive well in our journey towards God. We are now headed for the good seasons of life and beyond, where the roses never fade.

With the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on the cross, gone are the days when we have to live with the burden of sin.
