We all have fears; we overcome them. Fear plays a vital role in shaping and nurturing the human mind. The word fear, many times, followed by fear not is seen in the scripture.
When we were a child ghost stories, in other words, listening to people’s brushes with the supernatural world were enticing. It’s a good thing to have fear after all.
Many fictional characters and movies were made out of it. Fear easily toys around with our minds. It is a primary factor that makes us afraid of the dark and other phobias.
Do Not be Afraid:
Imagine you were alone performing whatever chores or work you have. Then, a supernatural being appeared before you. And you see you’re talking back to the voices. Mary might be in that situation. I did not say it with certainty, it was my assumption.
However, an angel did visit Mary. She was a woman; the conversation must be private. Thus, ruling out the presence of others. Once she realized who exactly was talking to her and who sent him, she was no more afraid. She listened to the message.
More importantly, her fear of God was displayed in her obedience to God.
Fear to Obedience:
Fearing God is obeying God!
If you have children, you might be bombarded with questions as to what exactly is the meaning of fearing God. The questions aplenty, and one among them is what is it to live fearing God all the time.?
It is obeying God, upholding what is right in his eyes. Not simply running away from his command – the story of Jonah may ring a bell. Let’s put Jonah for another time. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. Luke 1:38
God loves obedience more than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22 “If you love me. you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15
Obey to Mercy:
His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. Luke 1:49-50
As a believer in the living word of God, we need his mercy forever. This well-placed fear before him would let us be in his mercy not only for you and me but from generation to generation.
